Malta Public Transport

Your comprehensive guide to Everything Malta

Ah…the famous old Maltese buses. These are a tourist attraction in themselves but un/fortunately (depending on your point of view) seem to have finally hit the end of the road. The present government really seems intent in revamping the current system. The dilemma is between travelling in a piece of history (some of them date back to the 1950s) or travelling in cleaner and quieter comfort - the locals seem to have decided on the latter.

Objectively, the Malta buses are efficient and very reasonably priced. The majority of buses originate from the main terminus in front of the Valletta City Gate and travel to and from practically every corner of Malta. A route number (but not a destination) is illustrated on the front of the bus and these can be flagged down from various bus-stops scattered around the island. Remember to ‘ring the bell’ when you want to stop at the next drop-off point as the driver will not automatically stop at every bus-stop. The logic in Gozo is the same with the main bus terminus being in Victoria. There are a few circular routes but these only service a few principal resorts and are more expensive.

One-way fares range between €0.35 to €0.58. It is also possible to purchase from single day open tickets (€3.49) up to seven day open tickets (€13.98) purchasable from the Valletta, Sliema or Bugibba terminuses . For cruise passengers, a return ticket from the Valletta Waterfront to the Valletta City Gate is €0.93.

As a general rule, a bus passes from a bus-stop every 15-25mins and it does not usually take more than 30mins to arrive to your destination.
