Melita Trains Overview

Malta saw the last of its train railway system over seventy years ago after the introduction of trams (today also obsolete) and later of public buses. Melita Trains have brought the train back to Malta, albeit in a trackless version and as a good-looking tour attraction rather than as an essential means of travel.

The train is a pretty way of touring round the Maltese typical villages of Mtarfa, Mdina and Rabat – the former also the original destination of the Maltese Railway departing from Valletta. The train has a fairytale evocative feeling to it which is certain to put a smile on any child’s face (and their parent’s too!). But this is no toy...a locomotive pulling three cabins with comfortable ergonomic seating and a diesel powered engine that complies with environmental protection laws.

The trip includes an informative commentary highlighting the historic and architectural importance of the region. The thirty minute, eight kilometre ride departs from next to the Roman Villa in Rabat and passes by the Mdina Main Gate and Casino Notabile, going on to the centre of Rabat going by St. Paul's Cathedral and the nearby catacombs. Next destinations are Ghar Barka and Mtarfa with its Royal Navy Hospital and Clock Tower. This is the highest point in Malta and the ensuing downhill offers panoramic views of Mosta and Mdina. Finally, over the valley bridge to the Old Railway Station and up a steep hill under Mdina's bastions through Greek Gate Tunnel and back to the point of departure .

This is a nice, relaxing and well-priced trip (adults EUR 4 and children EUR 2.50). A recommended attraction after a walkabout in the mediavel capital of Mdina.

Departure times starting at 10am are on the hour every hour. Up to 8pm in Summer (June-Sep) and 4pm in Winter (Oct-May).

    Fun with a Difference

    John Wilson from England

This train tour is well organised and different from the tacky ones you sometimes find abroad. The documentary is very good and gives a good account of Mdina's history. It takes you around some of the sites well used by the British military during the British occupation of the Maltese islands.and you get a good feel of Mdina's past. The tour should be integrated and best taken before your visit into the silent city of Mdina. It is very good value for money and very enjoyable indeed. I would recommend this tour to everyone, regardless of age.

    Informative Sightseeing Train Tour

    Micheal Collins from Northamption UK

This train tour is one of the best attractions on the island. It is great value for money and attains to give the best information through its audio commentary, about the highlights of malta being Rabat, the old capital city of malta and the neighbour village of Mtarfa in a short time.

Lovely experience for all the family.

    Phyllis Fisher from England

We visited Rabat and Mdina but the most exciting part of this outing was our sightseeing train tour. This leaves from Rabat (follow the signs from the Playing Park) and takes you around the outskirts of Mdina and Mtarfa. The documentary, (in different languages) is very good and explains the history of this area. You can appreciate the outstanding beauty of the surrounding area and you get a much better view of the old city of Mdina from this fantastic train tour. Both children of all ages and adults will enjoy this trip - it is a must while visiting Malta.
